Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin on the farm bill (audio) 3-2-10

U.S. Representative Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin addressed the South Dakota Legislature Monday. She commended lawmakers on the hard work they do for the state and says Congress should look to them for a lesson in bi-partisanship.

Herseth-Sandlin says it’s been a tough year for Congress with the recession and slow progress on health care reform. Despite this she says Congress has been doing important work that directly affects the state of South Dakota. Herseth-Sandlin says one bill that passed with bi-partisan effort is the farm bill. She says the farm bill is not only important for farmers and ranchers but the entire state’s economy.
 
“Whether it be the folks in the northeast for which the crop-insurance program is the most important part of the safety net now,” says Herseth-Sandlin, “Whether its in times when our commodity prices are lower and the counter cyclical payments and other support programs to weather the ups and downs in a volatile marketplace." 
 
Herseth-Sandlin says congress needs to continue overseeing the implementation of the farm bill so farmers and ranchers receive benefits and disaster relief in an effective manner.
