A bill that would prohibit the investment of state funds into certain foreign oil companies is one step closer to the governor's desk. Senator Dan Lederman of the Dakota Dunes explained how some of these companies often help pay for the creation of weapons that kill United State soldiers. According to Lederman if passed South Dakota would fall in line with 20 other states.
Joel Arends a supporter of the measure and a veteran urged lawmakers to send the bill to the governor's desk and argued against those that say the passage of such a bill will have no realistic outcome.
Matt Clark the state investment officer did not argue the intent of the measure but commented that such a bill would not do any good and would only hurt the state retirement system.
The measure passed and will now go down to the house floor for further discussion. Lawmakers also passed a bill that would keep the Black Hills playhouse from being evicted. The Game Fish and Parks department over sees the lease of the playhouse and according to Secretary Jeff Vonk the buildings are in such bad shape - there was no other choice but to close the playhouse down.The bill will continue the lease agreement however it was amended to require the playhouse to take no less than 5 percent of it's earnings for structural costs. It now moves to the house floor.
