This is your statehouse update, I'm Stephanie Rissler. The South Dakota Legislature begins its final week of session.
South Dakota's opportunity scholarship is a program that continues to be reviewed by state lawmakers. House bill 1160 would allow home schooled students to receive the scholarship if they achieve the same levels of understanding as students in schools across the state.
Senator Ben Nesselhuff amended the bill to outline standard test scores necessary for qualification.
The bill passed as amended 27-1.
House bill 10-57 is a measure that would adjust the regulation and sale of raw milk. The dairy industry has received requests by consumers wanting the option to purchase milk, specifically goat milk from farmers. With this bill producers may sell unpasturized milk and goat milk if they have a permit and abide by rules as determined by the department of agriculture. Penalty for non-compliance is set as a fine of up toe $5,000.
Senator Ryan Maher from Isabel suggests an amendment which directs revenue into local school districts where the fine is acquired.
Senator Jean Hunhoff from Yankton says that this wasn't an appropriate use of the funding.
