Social Activism Policy (audio)

The Senate passed a resolution testing a new social activism policy in regards to the state’s investment funds. Lawmakers have created this social activism policy in Senate Bill 21. Senate Bill 21 still needs to be signed by the Governor before it becomes law.
House Concurrent Resolution 1012 directs the South Dakota Retirement Council to use the social activism policy to address the ongoing genocide being committed in Sudan. Senator Scott Heidepriem says South Dakota should not support companies who do business with Sudan. He says the state should use its authority as a stockholder to engage with these companies and demand that they stop their support of genocide.
“The Sudanese government with the support of some international oil companies continues to brutalize its own people,” says Heidepriem, “Already more than 300,000 Sudanese citizens have been killed and millions have been displaced; many have found their way to South Dakota.”
House Concurrent Resolution passed by a vote of 35 to 0.
