This is your Statehouse update. I'm Stephanie Rissler.
Education funding continues to be debated among lawmakers in Pierre. Members of the Senate focused on a bill already approved by the house. The measure would not increase education funding for the coming year. Senators debated whether or not to agree with the house or send it into a conference committee. Senator Jeff Haverly from Rapid City says that all state departments need to share in the burden of budget cuts.
Senator Ben Nesselhuf from Vermillion is against the Senate Bill 22 . He says that it is not fair to treat education the same as everyone else.
The Senate decided not to concur with the house and sent the bill back into a conference committee to for more possible changes.
The state budget is still the talk of the session as lawmakers are waiting to finalize it the general bill. The Joint Appropriations Committee met briefly on Wednesday. Senate Appropriations Chair Jean Hunhoff of Yankton says the committee cannot consider amendments to the spending bill until the Legislature completes work on some other measures.
Members of the Republican majority have pledged to cut Gov. Mike
Rounds' proposed budget by about $40 million to avoid using reserve
funds.
