South Dakota lawmakers are calling it a session, for now. The Joint appropriations committee has decided to stop work on the budget until they know if Congress decides to give 36 million to South Dakota for Medicaid. Before adjourning the Joint Appropriations committee did take up one amendment to the general bill dealing with funding for the Homestake Mine.
The Deep Underground Science Lab will be funded by the National Science Foundation but there is a 6 month gap from now until federal funds take over. The amendment proposes to transfer 5 million dollars for the Homestake Lab. Lawmakers voted down a similar measure because of disputes on where the funding should come from. Jason Diliges with the Bureau of Finance and Management offered the amendment to the appropriations committee.
Diliges says, "We can continue to work on the fund sources but I really think that South Dakota needs to send a strong message today about its commitment to this project."
The committee approved the amendment by a vote of 14 to 2. The Appropriations Committee will continue working on the budget on veto day, March 29th.
