This is your Statehouse Update. I'm Stephanie Rissler. As the 2010 legislative session comes to an end the general bill took center stage. The joint appropriations committee spent the final two days voting on amendments to the general bill. The debate over education funding was revisited once again. Senator Julie Bartling from Burke proposed to reinstate the 1.2% statutory increase. She says the lack of funding would put extra pressure on the school system.
Senator Jeff Haverly from Rapid City opposed the amendment. He says that South Dakota could be doing a lot worse.
The amendment failed to pass through the committee with a vote of 7 to 9.
The South Dakota State Fair was targeted for cuts. The proposed amendment would cut funding to the fair by $100,000. Those opposed to the bill testified that the fair brings in revenue and is an important South Dakota tradition. Senator Jeff Haverly once again spoke to the issue. He says that while it is hard to make such cuts, it is necessary for all state departments to share in the burden of budget cuts.
The bill passed with a 9 to 7 vote. Once all the amendments have been discussed, the general bill will be discussed in both chambers and then signed by the governor. This has been your Statehouse Update.
