DDN Cuts

The Joint Appropriations Committee took up several amendments Tuesday that affected education. Two amendments cut funding to technology programs.
Committee members voted to eliminate $300,000 from the DDN portion of the K-12 technology in schools program. Otto Doll is the Commissioner for the Bureau of Information and Telecommunications. He says thanks to streamlined technology, the cut in funding won't hurt the program.
"We can still provide the same level of service, the same capacity that we have always offered those institutions as well as continue to meet their needs in the future even though we're going to be doing it with less money based on this bill," Doll says.
The committee also eliminated some funding to the tech fellows program. It was originally up for a total elimination of state funds, but an amendment changed the cut from $770,000 to $270,000.
