Hunhoff Weighs In On Homestake

In his State of the State Address, the governor talked about financial concerns at the old Homestake Mine. One lawmaker from the other side of the aisle agrees with the governor’s assessment.
$29 million from the National Science Foundation won’t come through for an underground lab at Homestake. Governor Daugaard says he will work to secure funding for the lab, and House Minority leader Representative Bernie Hunhoff says the project is too important to stop now.
Hunhoff says, "Homestake is an interesting thing. We spent tens of millions of dollars, something like a couple hundred million dollars all together in the state, private and federal funds already on Homestake, and it’ll create something like at best 100, 200 jobs unless we hit gold so to speak, research gold, and something really big comes out of it. Yet I don’t say that to be critical, because I want state government to be more aggressive and take risks. And they took a risk and we’re here to make it work."
Hunhoff says Democrats will have to work with the governor and Republicans to make the Underground Lab at Homestake a reality.
