Governor Daugaard on Taxes

During Tuesday's State of the State address, Governor Dennis Daugaard pledged to serve as South Dakota's top salesman, with a goal to increase business development in the state. Daugaard says the state has a lot of incentives for business growth, and he will hold tax increases to keep development strong.
"We have the best business climate in the nation," Daugaard says. "And I intend to keep it that way. Our first advantage is our low tax burden. I am proud that South Dakota has the lowest per capita tax burden in the nation. I said many times during my recent campaign that I will not raise taxes except in an emergency like a blizzard or flood, and I mean it. A recession is the worst time to raise taxes, and if you send me a bill to raise taxes, I will veto it."
Daugaard also announced new positions at the cabinet level, including the Governor's Office of Economic Development, the Office of Tourism, and Secretary of Tribal relations. He gave the annual State of the State address in the opening hours of the 38-day State Legislative session.
