State of State Opening

South Dakota's 32nd Governor, Dennis Daugaard, spoke his first State of the State Address Tuesday in Pierre. He opened his speech by saying a state needs to be measured on previous standards. He says citizens of the state answered that question while most lawmakers were campaigning last year.
"They want balanced budgets," Daugaard says. "They want the deficit eliminated. They want fewer and simpler regulations. They want more and better jobs. They want to be protected from crime. They want help for those who want education or training, to become self-reliant. They want care for those who have no one to care for them. And they want better opportunities and better lives for themselves, their children and their grandchildren. In short, the people want a strong foundation for our state. And that's where we must focus our energy. That's why the people elected us."
Daugaard says he plans to create opportunities for small towns in the state-to assist with issues among the state's nine Indian tribes, and to help the state's two leading industries, agriculture and tourism, succeed. Daugaard will offer his revised budget address to a joint session of the legislature next Wednesday.
