The Senate Judiciary Committee unanimously passed a bill that adds a tribal member to the Law Enforcement Officers Standards Commission. The commission supervises curriculum for the certification of South Dakota law enforcement officers, and also deals with discipline and decertification. Attorney General Marty Jackley says adding a tribal member to the committee brings a new perspective.
"We are doing more and more work and business with our tribal communities," Jackley says. "Part of that is an effort to really improve public safety across South Dakota, to improve cooperative relationships. In that process we are training more and more tribal officers. Statistics show we've done 59 officers from six different tribes. So it's beginning to make sense that we have an additional position to change the commission to go from ten to eleven members."
The bill now moves to the Senate floor for further debate.
