Governor Dennis Daugaard is proposing to cut at least ten percent from all state departments and some agencies even more. Daugaard says all departments were aware of the possible cuts before he gave his budget address.
Governor Daugaard says after he was first elected he asked each state agency to find budget cuts. He says he went through every department proposal with agency finance officers to find specific program cuts rather than making an across the board ten percent reduction.
Daugaard says, "There really was attention given to each program in each agency and we tried to weigh what are the priorities, what are the more important ones."
Daugaard says some departments will have to cut employees. He says most agencies will leave positions unfilled after employees quit or retire but Daugaard says up to 40 government employees could lose their jobs at the start of fiscal year 2012.
