ASB Reacts to School Cuts

The state school board association is alarmed by the ten percent education cut being proposed by Governor Dennis Daugaard. Brian Aust with the Associated School Boards of South Dakota says the $60 million cut could mean dramatic changes to local schools, including cuts to programs, staff reduction, increased class size, and even school closings. Aust says public education is the foundation of long term economic prosperity.
"If you fail to invest in education it's going to limit our state's long term recovery," Aust says. "But in the short term it's going to cause a lot of conversations around particularly in small and rural communities about weather it's viable to keep schools open."
Aust says the state has set proficiency goals for schools to meet but it's not providing necessary resources to achieve the standards. Governor Dennis Daugaard says the cuts to education and the rest of state government are necessary to solve the structural deficit he says is plaguing South Dakota.
