Officials working to provide care to South Dakota seniors say the ten percent funding cuts being proposed by Governor Dennis Daugaard are unacceptable. Mark Deak with the South Dakota Health Care Association says these cuts could result in nursing homes being closed. He says this would have a domino effect in rural areas.
"Keep in mind that nursing homes are some of the largest employers in our smallest communities," Deak says. "So I'm no economist but it seems to me that in the midst of a continuing recession form a job prospective and form a business prospective it might not be the most prudent thing to do."
Deak says the level of care for the elderly and disabled could also be reduced by these cuts. Governor Daugaard says across the board cuts are necessary to fix the state's structural deficit. Daugaard says it would be irresponsible to put the cuts off until a later date.
