Governor Dennis Daugaard is taking his budget proposal directly to the citizens. Daugaard spoke at a noon rotary meeting in Sioux Falls. As SDPB’s Cara Hetland reports, the governor knows his budget is hard to swallow.
Governor Daugaard spent a good forty minutes repeating much of his budget address. He then took questions looking for specific impacts. But Daugaard holds firm to his conviction that ending the structural deficit in one year is what’s best for South Dakota.
Bite (:22) the politically expedient thing to do would be that which pleases the most people. Well, I’m not going to be that kind of governor. If I do what I think is right and I’m a one term governor fine. I’ll leave government saying I did what I thought was right and our state is stronger for it.
Daugaard says he does not support using one term money. He says non-profits and other organizations are going to have to step up and help fund areas that are being cut.
