Water District Voter Requirements

The state House Local Government Committee has voted to revise who can vote in water project districts. Currently a person is eligible if they are a registered voter, own property in the district, and live in the flood plain. Representative Tom Jones says that's a problem for areas near rivers.
"Basically no one lives in the flood plain anymore," Jones says. "It's not inhabitable. We have to also remember that the flood plain is not a wide area. It's basically along a river and it's whatever the river decides, and the water comes through there and decides to flood."
Jones says with House Bill 1044 a person only needs to be a registered voter and own property in the district. He says the change needs to be made so that the water project districts have legal voters. The bill now moves to the House floor.
