Lawmakers have defeated a bill challenging federal health care reform. House Bill 1088 nullifies the requirement to buy health insurance under the Affordable Care Act stating South Dakotans would not have to abide by the mandate. Republican Representative Manny Steele of Sioux Falls says South Dakota and all states need to send a message to the federal government to stop encroaching on states rights.
Steele says, "We as a state created the federal government and over the last eighty years or so both the Republican and Democrat congresses and the Presidents have slowly taken our sovereignty from us."
The House State affairs committee unanimously voted down the legislation.
Representative Steele says he will bring forth the issue in the form of a resolution. A resolution is not law but states the opinion of the legislature.
