By Kealey BultenaA bill that establishes standards to evaluate school principals is on its way to the House floor. Representative Jacqueline Sly says the measure creates a work group to determine performance criteria principals should meet."We have established standards for students, what they should know and be able to do. With Senate bill 24, we establish standards for teachers. But we do not have standards for principals that define what they should be measured against," Sly says. "Without standards, evaluation becomes more of a checklist rather than specific identifiers for principals at different stages of their profession."Opponents say districts already evaluate principals using standards tailored to their particular needs. Supporters say the standards would be guidelines, not mandates. The bill passed the House Education committee 9 votes to 5.Member stations download audio file here.
