Audio: No Ban on Tanning Beds for Teens
Air Date:01/31/2011
The Senate Health and Human Services Committee killed a bill that bans minors from using tanning salons without parental consent. SDPB's Charles Michael Ray has this story.
Sponsors of the bill say tanning beds increase the risk of skin cancer. Republican State Senator Shentel Krebs supports the bill. Krebs says tanning beds are dangerous.
"I just think it's a matter of protection for these young women who are being pushed into this by peer pressure," says Krebs.
But Republican Senator Jean Hunhoff argues the state should not ban tanning beds for minors - rather parents should decide.
"And if every time we start telling and regulating then parents further and further abdicate their roles of personal responsibility." Says Hunhoff.
The bill failed to move out of committee by a vote of four to two.
