State Senators killed a bill that eliminates the extra money small school districts get for open enrollment.
Senate Bill 85 cuts additional funding for students who open enroll in small districts. Small school lobbyist Scott Swier says the measure hurts education in districts already working with fewer funds.
"75 percent of our school districts in South Dakota receive the small school adjustment," Swier says. "The small school factor was placed in the formula for a reason. The basic principle is based on the economy of scale. It simply costs additional dollars to educate students in a small school."
Sponsors of the bill say it prevents recruiting and bussing issues. The Education Committee killed the legislation.
