The House State Affairs Committee killed a bill that discloses who attends state events like the governor’s pheasant hunt.
Democrat Mitch Fargen says South Dakotans should know who’s on the lists. But Republican Charles Turbiville says business leaders are invited to those events and releasing names hurts economic development.
"In every case, it was very very important that the names of those individuals not be released, because if those names are made public, and I’m absolutely opposed to this, then individuals working for the company have knowledge that there may be some move afoot, there may be some expansion," Turbiville says. "It would cause innumerable problems back home. If they had a labor union working for them, the labor union would get involved."
Governor Daugaard’s Chief of Staff, Dusty Johnson, testifies the new administration already plans to release the names. The bill died in committee.
