Valhalla Information Stays At Governor's Discretion

Lawmakers have killed legislation that reveals the names of people who rent a state cabin in Custer State Park.
Democratic Representative Mitch Fargen tells the House State Affairs Committee that South Dakota citizens should know who stays at Valhalla and how much they pay.
"We would like for it to be a public record and open to the public for inspection," Fargen says. "I believe Valhalla should be open to the public and the people should know who stays there and uses the facility, especially since it’s limited to the discretion of the governor."
Chief of Staff Dusty Johnson says Governor Dennis Daugaard will release Valhalla information periodically. That satisfies Republican Representatives on the committee. The measure died by a vote of 8 to 4 along party lines.
