Business Funded PAC's Approved
Air Date:02/02/2011
A bill before lawmakers in Pierre allows corporations and businesses to contribute to Political Action Committees in South Dakota. A long list of business organizations testified in support of the bill during the Senate State Affairs committee.
SDPB's Charles Michael Ray has this story.
Under the proposed law businesses can contribute up to 10-thousand dollars in donations to fund political action committees. The bill allows corporations the same rights as individuals when contributing to PAC's. Republican Senator Bob Gray supports the legislation
"Business pay a lot of property taxes, they collect our sales takes they create jobs they contribute to the unemployment fund the futures fund. I don't have any problems with businesses making a contribution to a political action committee," says Gray.
No one testified against the bill in committee. But Democratic Senator Jason Frericks is concerned the bill reduces transparency and allows corporations to hide behind PAC's when they contribute to campaigns. Senate Bill 93 passed by a vote of six to one. The bill goes on to the Senate floor.
