Democrats Call Republican Sales Tax Bill A Step

Democratic legislators say they’re looking for more ways to work with the majority party.
This week, a Republican lawmaker proposed a temporary sales tax increase but it died in committee. Senate Minority Leader Jason Frerichs says it is still a move in the right direction.
"The general public does not want ten percent cuts that directly affect the kids that are in their communities and the schools that already are operating efficiently," Frerichs says. "So if we can strike that harmony, maybe the tax increase is off the table, but if we can at least get through this year and look at a two to a three year plan, we certainly feel a lot of interest. And this idea is a step toward a two or a three year plan, because it’s saying we just need to get through these tough times."
Democratic leaders say they hope Republicans continue to work across the aisle to develop solutions for South Dakota’s problems.
