Senate Approves Interlock Devices

The South Dakota Senate approved a bill that allows the state's 24/7 sobriety program to use ignition locking devices. The interlock system prevents people from starting their vehicles if they've been drinking. Senate Bill 33 allows Attorney General Marty Jackley to run a pilot project with the equipment in one county. Some lawmakers want the bill to do more. Senator Stan Adelstein introduced an amendment that allows the Attorney General to expand the program.
"I don't want him to have to delay the implementation, the use of this device which has been proven to be very successful in other states, until after an experiment and the legislature meets again," Adelstein says. "I want to get those people that are injuring people not just in Lincoln County or some test county."
The Senate did not pass the amendment. It unanimously passed the bill which now heads to a House committee.
