Campaign Finance Legislation

The Senate Local Government Committee unanimously passed a bill that aims to add more accountability to campaign advertising. Senate Bill 84 adds a $50 penalty for failure to properly disclose who paid for political ads. Secretary of State Jason Gant says the bill doesn't create a system to actively monitor campaign ads for violations. He says the main goal is education.
"What we're looking at is not implementing anything at this time, but just being ready," Gant says. "What I want to do is begin more education with these groups, with these entities that are in charge of the elections as well as the candidates. If we can have it easier on the web site for you to understand, you have to put this disclaimer, you have to file this report. If we can do that easier, that would be what our goal is there."
The bill also creates an election education and compliance fund. The measure now goes to the Senate floor for further debate.
