House Sends Traffic Camera Ban To Senate

Air Date:02/08/2011

By Kealey Bultena

The House of Representatives sends a bill banning red light cameras to the Senate.

The one South Dakota intersection that has a camera is at 10th Street and Minnesota Avenue in Sioux Falls. Republican Gene Abdallah says it’s a traffic trap.

"Is there a camera on every corner in Sioux Falls and every corner in South Dakota where someone was killed?" Abdallah asks. "The only reason that camera is on that corner in Sioux Falls is because a high-profile business unfortunately had the person working there who was killed. So they put a camera in there; they delayed the turning signal there. Only in that intersection in the state of South Dakota. That is nothing but a trap, and this thing should be killed. This bill should pass and we should outlaw those cameras."

Other supporters question how drivers can argue the fine they get in the mail.

Republican Charles Hoffman opposes the measure. He says the camera is a tool law enforcement officers use across the U.S.
