By Jackelyn SeverinThe Bureau of Information and Technology is proposing to cut over seven million dollars from its budget following recommendations from the Executive Branch. Jim Edman is the interim commissioner for BIT. Edman says the department will find cuts through decreasing services and employees. The Bureau is reducing the number of employees by 27. Four employees will be cut from the Commissioner’s Office, five from the division of Telecommunications, four from the Development division, four from the Data Center division and ten from South Dakota Public Broadcasting. He says some of the results of cuts in funding will be elimination of hardware and software maintenance and slower response time for repairs to state computers and telecommunications systems. Also, the elimination of pre-school K-12 and higher education support services and a reduction in programming from South Dakota Public Broadcasting.
