House Committee Votes to Study Higher Education

South Dakota legislators want to study the state's delivery of postsecondary education, and how it compares to other models. The House Education Committee passed a bill mandating an interim study by a vote of 12 to one. Representative David Lust is a sponsor of the measure. He says it's presumptuous to assume the state is currently managing higher education in the best way.
"I'm not convinced that where we are today, that we've arrived there by design," Lust says. "I think in many respects what we have in higher ed right now in South Dakota has been reactive to various things. And I'd like to think that we could put ourselves on a path that we could act with design, taking into consideration some of the factors that we're dealing with on a local, state and national level."
Lust says if South Dakota is giving postsecondary education less funding, the state's universities should have more autonomy to operate. He says the study mandated in House Bill 1235 could help design an alternative system that allows greater flexibility.
