Department of Corrections officials have made their case to members of the Appropriations Committee in Pierre. This budget looks a little different than those of other agencies.
Governor Dennis Daugaard is looking to lawmakers to make sweeping scalebacks in all areas of government. But the Department of Corrections budget eliminates 7.8 percent, instead of this session’s 10 percent standard. Secretary of Corrections Tim Reisch presents the proposal.
"We looked across the whole the department in every area of operations personal services, supplies. We looked at the usage of those areas in previous years," Reisch says. "So I would just tell you across the board if there was any unused personal services, supplies, travel, we got rid of it in this budget."
The Department’s plan includes closing the admissions section at STAR Academy, the state’s juvenile corrections system. That move recoups money from eleven full time positions.
The D.O.C. cuts 39 full time positions in this budget.
