The House of Representatives in Pierre has voted to repeal the 100 student minimum for South Dakota school districts.
Supporters such as Republican Kim Vanneman say the 2007 law uses an arbitrary number of students necessary for a school district by requiring 100 kids.
"As a direct result of that law, nine districts have reorganized," Vanneman says. "The message is very clear: this is a local control issue. Local school boards elected by and held accountable by local residents know what is best for children in the district."
House Bill 1229 comes from the office of Governor Dennis Daugaard. Opponents, including Republican Representative Jim Bolin, say the governor’s initiative takes money away from the formula because schools aren’t forced to consolidate.
