History Standards Bill Fails

The Senate Education Committee killed a bill that prohibits the Board of Education from adopting certain standards for the subject of history. The measure is a preemptive notion to combat the Common Core Standards which the state adopted last November. Currently, Math and English are the only subjects under Common Core Standards. But, proponents say History will soon follow. Republican Representative Jim Bolin says the state is already on that road.
Bolin says, "And I want to make sure we don't go into those more controversial subjects that are subject to interpretation. You know one thing I learned while I was in college; history from a teaching standpoint involves not only what you teach, but what you leave out. It's so much about interpretation. And we need to stop it now."
Opponents say the bill sets a bad precedence. They say it will prohibit the board of education from debating policies. The measure failed six to one.
