A bill was passed to help provide resource centers for veterans at state colleges and universities. House Bill 1196 originally required universities to have veterans' resource centers. However, the Senate Education Committee amended it to only be optional. Right now, three state institutions have veterans programs. Only the School of Mines has an actual resource center, which is not funded by the state. Opponents say the bill just duplicates services that are already available. Republican Senator Todd Schlekeway proposed the amendment. He says the measure deserves a floor debate.
Schlekeway says, "One institution out of six has it. We can do better than that. This will not be mandatory. But lets get the conversation started. I think laws sometimes provide the impotice to provide a stronger message. And I think it allows our folks to continue to have this conversation. So I want to support this bill if the amendment passes."
The measure was sent to the Senate with a unanimous vote.
