The House passed new provisions for organizations qualifying for sales tax exemptions. Currently, relief and religious agencies do not need to be physically present in the state to qualify for sales tax exemptions. Republican Representative Tona Rozum proposed the bill. She says it affects approximately 20 relief agencies and four religious education institutions.
Rozum says, "If a relief agency is located out of this state they are not providing or devoting their resources exclusively to the poor, distressed, and under privileged in South Dakota."
Senate Bill 39 passed with a 54 to 15 vote. It has passed both houses and is on its way to the governor.
