Lawmakers Discuss AP Classes

Democratic leadership in Pierre says budget cuts should be made by eliminating failing programs, not cutting successful ones.
One element of the Department of Education's budget proposal removes funding for AP classes in high school, so districts will have to foot the bill. House Minority Leader Bernie Hunhoff weighs in.
"Advanced Placement is a good example. If that is a good program, then it's a good program and it should be continued. If it's a bad program, it should be discontinued," Hunhoff says. "Its future shouldn't be decided on a false presumption that we have to end the structural deficit in one year."
Hunhoff says he's concerned that schools will increase property taxes if they're forced to pay for more expenses formerly covered by the state.
