University students from across the state gathered at the Capitol Tuesday to speak out against Governor Dennis Daugaard’s proposed cuts for higher education. Students say they can’t handle a six to eight percent hike in tuition that these cuts could bring.
Tim Carr is a student with the University of South Dakota’s Student Government Association. Carr, who grew up in Iowa, says he came to South Dakota because it offered quality education at an affordable price. He says higher education has already endured cuts over the past two years and if more cuts prevail South Dakota will suffer serious economic consequences down the road.
"I truly believe that we’re at a crossroads in the state of South Dakota where if we don’t make a strategic decision to start investing and increasing that state support to our higher education institutions, we’re going to lose students to other universities in other states," Carr says.
Carr says South Dakota’s higher education system created more than $2 billion worth of economic impact in the state last year.
