Monday is the start of the final week of the legislature in Pierre. Lawmakers have just five days left in the regular session to come up with a bill that balances South Dakota’s budget. Republican Representative Hal Wick says lawmakers will start amending the budget bill mid-week.
Wick says, “Tuesday night they have to go through and figure out what every amendment will do to the budget. How many more dollars will it make available for something if it’s a cut, and how many more dollars will it take if it’s an addition? The fiscal staff and the Legislative Research Council will figure that out Tuesday night, with very little sleep probably, and they’ll have it for Wednesday morning and they’ll start working on the amendments then.”
Wick says the general bill will come out Friday. Lawmakers say a primary reason they wait to tackle the general bill until the end is that final revenue projects aren’t available until then. Legislators will hear those numbers on Monday.
