Gov. Daugaard Opposes Bill Raising Vehicle Fees

Governor Dennis Daugaard says he's planning to veto a bill that raises the price of vehicle registration fees. The Senate passed the measure earlier this week. House Bill 1192 is intended to help pay for road and bridge repairs, but Daugaard says the measure goes against his campaign principles.
"I said during the campaign I don't believe a recession is the time to raise taxes," Daugaard says. "And this, although labeled a fee is clearly intended to raise revenue, not offset an administrative cost. And I think I need to be true to what I said I would do, and I believe it's the right course."
Lawmakers like Representative Charles Hoffman say they need to vote for what they believe is right, even if the Governor threatens a veto.
