Members of South Dakota’s House have defeated a bill that designates $500,000 for a maintenance shed near the Capitol complex.
Democrat Dennis Feickert says storing equipment miles away isn’t efficient and a new building is the answer.
"It’s an opportunity to construct a building that has the aesthetics to fit In with the other buildings that are on the grounds. It’s going to cost money to run back and forth to bring this equipment in and out. It’s going to take manpower. It could be a safety issue, traveling back and forth. There’s all kinds of things," Feickert says. "I think this is an opportunity for the legislators to allow for efficiency in state government."
More lawmakers say several hundred thousand dollars is too much money for a building in a year schools and Medicaid are bracing for significant cuts. Representatives killed the bill by voting 31 to 39.
