House Votes To Change Some Vehicle Registration Costs

The South Dakota House passed a bill that increases the registration fees for people who drive cars between five and ten years old.
Currently, cars that are at least five years old cost seventy percent of regular vehicle registration fees. Senate Bill 99 instead applies that savings to only cars more than a decade old. Democrat Paul Dennert opposes the bill. He says the measure raises vehicle fees for people who can’t afford brand new cars.
"I just cannot bring myself to vote for a bill that only raises fees to a certain group of people that own vehicles, the 5-10 year old group of people," Dennert says. "I don’t think I can go home and tell my people that, we just saw fit to raise your registration fees, but the people who buy new cars every year, we just let them alone."
Supporters say Senate Bill 99 makes registration costs for cars less than 10 years old the same proportion, instead of giving some a discounted rate.
The bill passed the House by a vote of 41 to 29.
