A committee has killed a measure to make bonus money available for South Dakota employees.
Members of Joint Appropriations met to make changes to the general fund bill. Republican Representative Tad Perry supports an amendment that allocates funding for state worker bonuses that are based on performance.
"What I am bringing to you is an opportunity to soften the blow on state employees who have taken no salary policy for what will now be the third year," Perry says.
Perry says the total bonus amount is the equivalent of about one percent of state employee salaries. But lawmakers outlining the final budget bill decided not to amend the general fund plan to offer the bonuses. Joint Appropriations made final committee changes to the bill, and passed it on to the House and Senate floors.
