House, Senate Override Registration Fee Bill Veto

South Dakota’s legislature has overridden the governor’s veto of a bill that raises vehicle registration fees.
Thursday, the House of Representatives tackled House Bill 1192. Governor Dennis Daugaard refused to make it law after legislators sent it to his desk. But Representatives voted to override the governor’s veto.
Later in afternoon, Senators considered the bill. Democrat Jason Frerichs of Wilmot says the governor is wrong. He says counties need the revenue H.B. 1192 generates to fix roads, especially following bouts of severe flooding.
"The governor has chosen to take a more political route of trying to advocate that this fee increase doesn’t fit into his platform. This is certainly a worthwhile piece of legislation," Rhoden says.
Republican Larry Rhoden of Union Center says the governor isn’t out of line to keep money with the people who earn it.
"Call it what you want: a tax, a fee. We are talking about $30 million out of pocket of citizens and putting them in the hands of local government," Rhoden says.
Both chambers overrode the veto by a significant margin.
