Daugaard seeks a thousand new families in state

After a state firm told him jobs were moving to Texas because of a lack of engineers, Governor Dennis Daugaard developed a plan to change the situation. His proposed "South Dakota Wins" program has a goal of improving numbers of in-state skilled laborers and engineers-and also encourages people to move to South Dakota for their jobs. Daugaard told a joint session of the Legislature today he has a goal of one thousand new families in the state.
Daugaard said, "The impact of one thousand new welders and engineers and machinists on our state's economy will be enormous. Those one thousand families will add more than 120 million dollars to our gross state product; put hundreds of children in our schools, and pay millions of dollars in state taxes."
Daugaard says education, particularly technical schools, offers a key component in the plan. The governor also plans to improve access to health care in rural areas of South Dakota, with incentives for doctors, nurses and physician assistants to practice in smaller towns.
