NSU Works to Keep Math, Science Teachers In-State

Northern State President Jim Smith says he's very excited about Governor Dennis Daugaard's proposal to bring incentives to math and science teachers in the state. The plan is part of his "South Dakota WINS" and Invest in Teachers initiatives. Smith says the rewards and incentives could allow new teachers to spend their careers in South Dakota.
Smith says "Many of our students, particularly education majors, would like to stay in northeast South Dakota-and we can't always help them with that. But we have a good track record of keeping people in the state. Student-teaching experience has always been strong for students; if they do well student-teaching, and they're in a district that has an opening-that obviously gives them a leg up on the opportunity to stay in that district. We work closely with superintendents, we work closely with principals, and if a kid wants to stay in South Dakota, we certainly work our very best to help them do that."
Smith says Northern State has a strong education major, and adds the school has already seen an increase of students looking into teaching math and science.
