Supreme Court Chief Justice David Gilbertson says probation saves the state a significant amount of money. Gilbertson spoke on the issue in his State of the Judiciary address before lawmakers in Pierre. He says there's approximately ten thousand South Dakotans on probation - that number is 500 HIGHER THAN two years ago.
Justice Gilbertson says the record of success in supervising people on probation is impressive but there is still concern.
"With an annual increase with the number of people placed on probation to continue this kind of success we must have corresponding numbers of court service officers to affectively supervise the 10 thousand probationers," Gilbertson says.
Gilbertson says currently the cost of probation costs 3 dollars a day where the cost of incarceration is over sixty-six dollars per day.
