Regents React to Governor's Teacher Initiative Plan

The president of South Dakota Board of Regents says universities that offer teacher prep are already training students to meet expectations laid out by the Governor. Dennis Daugaard repeated his State of the State address at School of Mines and Technology YESTERDAY/WEDNESDAY evening and reiterated changes he wants to see in K-12 education. SDPB's Victoria Wicks has this report.

Regents President Kathryn Johnson says teaching programs at South Dakota universities have changed over the past few years, with greater emphasis on effectiveness and performance.
(:08) "It's becoming far less about memorization than it is about understanding the concepts and being able to really do these experiments, kind of on their own."
She agrees with Governor Daugaard that compensation and rewards for superior results are more important than tenure to those considering going into teaching.
Daugaard wants tenure for incoming K-12 teachers to end. He says tenure is a tool to protect freedom of expression for professors in higher education.
(:09) "To see it migrate into the high school and elementary arenas is sort of contrary to the reason why tenure came about."
Daugaard says teachers who currently have tenure will keep it, but incentives for new hires should include more money for teachers who demonstrate excellence and those who go into science and math.
