Governor Explain Jobs, Housing in Rapid City

Governor Dennis Daugaard says part of his proposal to bring workers to South Dakota is to study the need for housing. Daugaard was at the School of Mines and Technology Wednesday evening, repeating his State of the State Address for a Black Hills audience. SDPB's Victoria Wicks spoke with Daugaard about the Housing Needs Study Program.
This spring, SDPB learned that one reason jobs aren't filled in Aberdeen is that potential workers have a difficult time finding affordable housing.
Aberdeen is too large to benefit from a new housing program launched by the Governor's Office, but communities of fewer than 10,000 residents can apply for matching funds to develop local housing plans.
Dennis Daugaard says a housing plan starts with a housing study, with results made available to developers so that they can better identify profitable market niches.
Daugaard says, "It's an effort to help encourage developers to fill the gap, because we want to encourage private enterprise, and this is one way we can show them, if you invest in this area, they can take the study to their banker, maybe get lending to afford the development."
The program is part of the South Dakota Wins program and is still in development, with more information available at the end of March.
