Legislation tries to create recall elections for county commissioners

A legislative committee has killed a bill creating recall elections for county commissioners. Proponents of House Bill 1072 say currently there is no way for citizens to recall a county commissioner. Opponents say although state law doesn’t provide for recall elections it does provide for the removal of a commissioner when he or she isn't fulfilling his or her responsibilities. Bob Wilcox is with the County Commission Association. He says a recall is unnecessary because voters get a chance to remove county commissioners every four years through the election process.
“It gives our constituents the opportunity to evaluate our performance and decide whether we continue to serve or not,” says Wilcox. “And in the last election, we have approximately 322 city commissioners, when that night was done we had forty-two new ones. I think this process is working for us. I see no reason whatsoever to change it.”
The House State Affairs Committee killed the bill by a vote of 12 to 1.
