Senate Committee OKs Cabinet Posts
Air Date:01/23/2012
The Senate State Affairs Committee confirmed several Cabinet Appointments today/Monday. Lieutenant Governor Matt Michels (MICHAELS) will fill the Secretary of Veterans Affairs post for one year. Michels takes the position until the recently-hired Secretary, National Guard Sergeant Major Larry Zimmerman, can take over next year.
Michels told the committee, "Due to his commitment-and he's just a phenomenal man-but do to his commitments and his career path, he said ‘I'd like to take this job, but I can't, because I should fill this billet until January of 2013.' The Governor and I talked about that, as he was the recommendation, and sat back and said, well, this is difficult, because although we had others who were available, we thought he just brought the best-rounded approach, given his experiences as an enlisted individual, but also in the civilian world."
Members also approved J-R LaPlante as Secretary of Tribal Affairs, and Jim Hagen as Secretary of the Department of Tourism. The lone bill scheduled to be under consideration was tabled to Wednesday.
